As we read aloud, I make frequent stops and have students discuss, interpret, write, or draw. This allows students to constantly stay engage in the reading and allows me to monitor how they are understanding (if I need to reread, discuss, or explain).

Our ELL students read ESPERANZA RISING. I think this book could connect well with this book. Esperanza must find her inner strength and adjust to a new country and social class. Both characters discover that it is not about what they have (or don’t have), it is about who they are and finding the beauty that we all hold.

We are going to work with our district and local churches to help out homeless families in our district. We will host drives to get necessities and will help clean the places we have for these families to stay while they get back on their feet.

I’d love to see 5 separate giveaways. This will put the books into more schools and, ultimately, more kids’ hands! I know that at my school, we all share the class sets of books that we have so that each class gets to read the books. AND! We can stretch our money and order even more books!!
