I do book studies every year with my students. I connect the book that we’re reading with the lessons that I’ve been teaching in class such as point of view, characterization, etc. I’ve done mini lessons on the standards that the students need to know and then we read and discuss the novel. It didn’t take long for the students to buy-in and they were often excited to read a novel rather than stories from the textbook.
